With the public smoking ban now firmly in place, land based bingo halls could struggle to keep the punters inside, but the future for online bingo site has never looked so good.
That was the message from Spectra Games, one of the UK's leading sites for bingo online, which said that many bingo players would rather stay outside and smoke than play bingo in the halls. More than a dozen bingo halls have been forced to shut their doors so far this year.
It's not all doom and gloom for the old guard though, with a growing number of bingo halls setting up websites and online casinos that let their players carry on gaming while enjoying a cigarette.
Adam Knight, marketing director of Spectra Games, said: "Since the law passed we have been seeing spectacular growth throughout our business.
"We do not think it should be attributed only to the smoking ban, but to a number of reasons, like increased TV advertising and improved promotions and cash prizes."
According to the Guardian, a study published by the Bingo Association last year revealed that the closure of bingo halls is having a major "social" effect on people who use bingo as a chance to socialise with friends away from their home or workplace.
