Greece's online gambling market could undergo change
16th May 2008
Britain's online bingo halls may have the access to spread their custom to another foreign market, reports bingostreet.com.
The Greek gambling market is an unknown quantity to non-Greek online bingo outlets, but this may not be for long as speculation states that the Greek government may have a change of attitude towards its gambling policy.
Greece currently operates one of the most monopolistic gambling markets within the EU, meaning that those from Greece that like to play bingo are restricted to having a bingo game online through the state controlled OPAP, which holds the monopoly.
However it is believed that the gambling laws in Greece may be loosened to prevent OPAP from receiving charges from the European Court of Justice.
European Commission official Charlie McCreevy and Greek economic minister George Alogoskoufis are due to meet soon to discuss the issue further.
The news comes after the European Commission has made a conscious effort to tackle the monopolised gambling market which is common in many European countries.
Earlier this month it was reported that Denmark's government had taken a forward step in allowing non-Danish gambling websites to have access to their bingo cash prize players.
