A community club in Liverpool that has served the local people for more than 100 years saw its doors close for the final time at the weekend, reports the Liverpool Echo.
The local council has been blamed for the closure of Aigburth People's Hall by the facility's members, as they believe the council put the rent up on the property to an unaffordable level.
City businessman John Temple founded the hall in 1901 and over time the hall has been used for bingo game play sessions, concerts and it also has its own bowling green for budding players.
However, the hall will be used for bingo no more, as despite pleas to drop the rent from the hall's treasurer Phil Wolstenholme, the local authority refused to budge.
It was hoped by Mr Wolstenholme that the hall's final night on Saturday would be a celebration and not a funeral.
When the newspaper questioned the local council, a spokesman said that the rent had not increased for eight years.
Bingo fans in the London borough of Barking and Dagenham were also fuming after a hall which gave them the chance to play bingo was shut down because of a funding crisis, according to the Barking and Dagenham Recorder.
